Diego Stocco – Recording Live
Pretty sweet atmospheric sound, all created through a hand-built bass player, foot pedals and Ableton Live.
When it comes to playing a hand-built Fence Bass and recording it live, there aren’t hard and fast rules or techniques you have to follow. But musician, composer, and sound designer Diego Stocco can certainly make the mysterious timbres of his exotic instruments into evocative atmospheres. In “Dustland,” the performance and effects are all recorded live – no edits after the fact, no layering — and the results could take you to another world, planetary or psychological.

“Dustland” is a cinematic sounding improv that I recorded with the Fence Bass. This instrument has a rough and edgy sound since it’s all made of metal, so I imagined a piece that could work in a modern Western film, I’m a fan of the genre.
Everything is created in real time, no pre-existing loops, additional tracks or post-efx involved. I built a chain of processors in Live that I control with a pedal board, all rhythmic parts and ambiences are derived from whatever sound/noise comes from the Fence Bass.
